More About The Breed

The Aussiedoodle is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Standard or Miniature Poodle. These dogs are known for being intelligent, friendly, and affectionate. They are also sometimes referred to as Aussiepoos or Aussiepoodles.

Aussiedoodles may be a variety of colors, but typically inherit coloring similar to what is seen in Australian Shepherds, so blue merle, red merle, black and red tri, or black and tan.

Commonly referred to as the “Einstein” of breeds, Aussiedoodles are highly intelligent, a crucial trait for someone selecting a dog for therapy or obedience training. They get their high energy from the Australian Shepherd line, meaning they like to have a lot of space and time to exercise. This, combined with the sharp wit of the Poodle, makes for a canine superstar.

The Aussiedoodle adapts well to change. They do well in most climates, but, as with any dog, do not typically do well in extreme hot or cold. They are best-suited for active families and homes with yards where they can romp around. Aussiedoodles can do well in apartments, as long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention.

However, they do not like to be alone for long periods of time and they can develop separation anxiety. If you do have to leave your Aussiedoodle alone, make sure to leave them plenty of challenging toys and puzzles to keep them occupied.

This breed has an average lifespan of 10-14 years. Aussiedoodles have the potential to develop health conditions common to both Australian Shepherds and Poodles but are less at a risk than their purebred counterparts due to their mixed breed heritage.

The Aussiedoodle is known for being an intelligent crossbreed. This often makes them highly trainable. They are also sensitive and eager to please, which means they respond best to positive training techniques focused on rewards and praise.

Early socialization and training help your Aussiedoodle puppy grow into a well-adjusted dog. Due to their high energy level, they tend to be a better fit for intermediate to experienced dog owners that know how to handle their energy and keep up with them.

Their intelligence, paired with their high energy level and working group background, means they are often easily bored and do best when they have a job to do. The busier and more engaged their job keeps them the better.

They also love learning new tricks! Without a job to do, they will find ways to entertain themselves, which can result in unwanted or even destructive behavior.

Because they are a mixed breed, Aussiedoodles can have different types of fur. Some will have the long, straight hair of the Australian Shepherd, others resemble a Poodle with loose curls, and some fall somewhere in the middle. Depending on their coat, most Aussiedoodles require routine grooming and haircuts.

This is a very high-energy breed, so make sure your Aussiedoodle gets plenty of time for exercise! They love to play outside and need a good walk each day to get rid of that energy. A happy Aussiedoodle is a busy Aussiedoodle! They thrive on having a "job" and excel at canine sports, such as agility.

The Aussiedoodle’s size varies depending on which kind of poodle they are crossed with.
  • Standard Aussiedoodles will weigh 25-75 pounds and stand 14-25 inches tall.
  • Miniature Aussiedoodles will weigh 15-25 pounds and stand 12-18 inches tall.
An Aussiedoodle generally lives for 10-12 years.

Aussiedoodles are fantastic companions and highly intelligent. So much so, they are fondly referred to as “canine Einsteins”.
