Australian Shepherds are a highly trainable breed, though it is important that they have lots of time and space to exercise! This incredibly high-energy dog is known for being loyal and bonding to their humans, but their boundless energy can become a problem if left unchecked. 

Australian Shepherds are ideal dogs for a farm, ranch or larger property with ample outdoor space. They are not well suited for apartments due to their higher energy level.

Aussies are generally healthy dogs, living 12-15 years, though it’s not uncommon for the breed to encounter hip dysplasia, epilepsy, cataracts, and certain kinds of cancer. It is also important to regularly check and clean an Aussie’s ears, as they can be prone to wax buildup.

Owning an Australian Shepherd is incredibly rewarding when you take the time to train them as a puppy. They are quick to learn and are perfect companions to join you on outdoor adventures. Their incredible loyalty is unmatched.

Australian Shepherds have a double coat, which can be prone to shedding but helps to keep these working dogs warm in cold temperatures. They are known for their merle coloring and stunning eyes. They should be brushed regularly, bathed occasionally, and their nails should be trimmed on a routine basis.

The Australian Shepherd usually stands about 18-23” high and weighs between 40-65 lbs.
