More About The Breed

  • The Cavapoo is a mix that brings together two beloved breeds: the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, sporty and cuddly; and the Poodle, noble and intelligent. This creates a well-adapted cross that is easy to love. They are incredibly loving and sweet natured and are so eager to please their owner. They are also known as intelligent and highly trainable dogs.

  • The Cavapoo is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), Designer Dogs Kennel Club (DDKC), Dog Registry of America, Inc. (DRA), Designer Breed Registry (DBR), and International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR).
  • Cavapoos are extremely playful and intelligent. They are likely to greet everyone as a friend and they make great family pets. Their mix of playfulness, trainability, and soft-heartedness also makes them great therapy/service dogs. They have also been known to compete in sports like agility, obedience, and rally.
  • Because of their sensitive souls, harsh tones and rigorous training can be detrimental, so it is best to keep sessions short and playful. Consistency and positive reinforcement are keys to a well-adjusted pup.

Due to their smaller size and moderate energy level, the Cavapoo is a good fit for apartment living and can adapt to larger homes as well. Cavapoos tend to have a short muzzle, which means they do not handle heat very well and, because they are smaller, they don’t handle cold very well either.

This dog breed is very much a companion breed that is meant to stay with you indoors. They also will often adapt their energy level to their owner’s lifestyle. They’ll need a certain amount of exercise to stay healthy, but are more than ready to be more active if it means being with you more often.

  • Cavapoos are generally a healthy breed, living 10-15 years. They can be susceptible to health issues common in both the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle, like Mitral Valve Disease, hip dysplasia, and patellar luxation. The best way to assess health risks is to check with the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and ask about health testing.

A Cavapoo has the potential to be highly trainable. They are smart and learn quickly, but they do have a mind of their own. So, they may be more interested in cuddling or sitting on your lap than listening to basic commands. They might change their mind and find the command or trick worth performing if there is a treat involved. Early socialization and training will help a Cavapoo puppy grow into a well-adjusted dog.

They do tend to get bored, so you’ll want to keep training sessions short and focused on fun. Due to their short attention spans, especially as puppies, consistency in training is imperative. Cavapoos also tend to be sensitive, which means they respond best to positive reinforcement techniques like play, food rewards, and praise. Because they are sensitive souls, harsh or sharp tones can sometimes send a Cavapoo into a sulk or a pout.

  • Cavapoos are considered hypoallergenic. Their coats can vary depending on the genes they inherit, but they are typically soft and wavy/curly. The Cavapoo’s coat should be brushed every 2-3 days to prevent matting and they will need to be groomed every month or two.

  • Because they’re a small breed, their gums are prone to disease, so their teeth should be brushed at least weekly. Their ears are also prone to infection and should be kept clean and dry.
  • Cavapoos need a moderate amount of exercise to stay healthy. Daily playtime and a walk are good for them, but they are also a very adaptable breed, so if your lifestyle is more active, they can adjust. However, they are not the most heat-tolerant breed, so they should not be overexerted in extreme temperatures.
  • The Cavapoo’s size depends on what kind of poodle is crossed. Typically, Cavalier Spaniels are not crossed with Standard Poodles because of the size difference, so Cavapoos are a cross of a Miniature or Toy Poodle with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
  • Mini Cavapoos are typically 12-16 inches tall, weighing 13-25 pounds.
  • Toy/Teacup Cavapoos are typically 9-12 inches tall, weighing 10-15 pounds.

This dog breed tends to live 10-15 years.

The Cavapoo is sometimes also referred to as a “Cavoodle”.
