The Cotonpoo is a mix between the Coton de Tulear and the Miniature or Toy Poodle. Also called “Poo-Tons,” this mix is lap-sized, fluffy, and playful. Their cottony coats can be apricot, lemon, white, grey, brown, or black.
Although Cotonpoos are small, they are extremely lively and enjoy attention, which people just can’t help but offer. They are lively and loving, making them a great fit for families. Their small size and general lack of shedding also make them great companion dogs for seniors or folks who live in small houses or apartments.
Cotonpoos are relatively trainable, and they benefit most from energetic training sessions. They have a strong desire to please their owners, so positive reinforcement is the best training method. Have lots of patience and treats, and most of all, be consistent.
Cotonpoos are relatively healthy dogs with a lifespan of 14-16 years. Like all dogs, they are susceptible to certain diseases because of their parent breeds. For the Poo-ton, these include adenitis, hip dysplasia, Addison’s disease, mitral valve disease, and retinal atrophy. The health of the parents, along with your dog's diet and exercise play a role.
Cotonpoos are considered hypoallergenic, but they do require a good amount of grooming to look their best. Their coats tangle easily, so daily brushing is recommended. They will also need to be clipped occasionally, especially around their face where their fur can obstruct their vision. In addition to their coats, their nails and teeth require frequent grooming and their ears should be kept clean and dry.
Cotonpoos need a moderate amount of daily exercise. Thirty minutes per day of physical activity, like a walk in the neighborhood or playtime in the yard are enough to keep them happy and healthy. In addition to physical exercise, mental stimulation with interactive toys and tricks are good for this smart little dog.
The Cotonpoo’s size depends on which variation of poodle they descended from. Generally, they weigh 7-15 pounds and reach a height of 8-12 inches. Toy Cotonpoos will be on the small side of that while Miniature Cotonpoos will be larger. Females are usually a bit small than males as well.
