More About The Breed

The Havapoo is a happy little cross between the Havanese breed and the Miniature or Toy Poodle. This hybrid may also be referred to as Poovaneese, Havanoodles, or Havadoodle. Their small size, adaptability, and loving disposition make them a great fit for families and single owners alike.

Havapoos are social animals who love people and attention. They are extremely playful and are known for their puppy-like behavior, even as adults. While they are intelligent and sensible, they may also be a bit strong-willed. Many owners find obedience training classes to be helpful for their Havapoos.

This is a highly adaptable dog breed. Due to their small size and temperament, they are a good fit for smaller apartments and larger homes. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. If you live in a climate with cold winters, you will likely need to put some layers on your Havapoo to help keep them warm, but they will have a ball playing for a short time in the snow. Because these dogs are truly a companion pet, they are happiest when they are around people, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time.

Havapoos generally live to be 10-14 years old. They are susceptible to the same illnesses as their parent breeds. These include cataracts, deafness, hypothyroidism, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, hip dysplasia, and patellar luxation. Responsible breeders know that the parents’ health is a key factor in healthy puppies.

The Havapoo is a highly trainable designer dog breed. In general, they are highly intelligent, attentive, and sensitive. They can sometimes have a little bit of a stubborn streak, so novice owners should not be afraid to seek out obedience training classes. Due to their small size, housebreaking can also sometimes be a challenge.

Due to their intelligence and attentive nature, Havapoos tend to pick up on things quickly as long as they are engaged. Because they are sensitive, it’s important to keep training positive. They will take harsh tones and corrections personally and it may send them into a pout while also making training less effective overall.

Havapoos are a low to non-shedding breed. To care for their coats, brush them a few times per week and bathe them monthly, and you should be good! Professional grooming is also recommended at least twice per year.

In addition to their coats, their nails should also be trimmed monthly. Check their ears regularly making sure they are clean and infection-free. Small dogs are also most susceptible to dental disease and decay, so brush their teeth a few times per week to keep them nice and healthy.

Havapoos have a moderate energy level. A nice daily walk and some playtime will keep them happy and healthy. They also enjoy trips to the park and short hikes.

The Havapoo’s size depends on its parents and which variation of Poodle it was crossed with.
  • Toy Havapoos are about 7-12 inches tall and weigh 7-15 pounds.
Miniature Havapoos reach a height of 11-16 inches and weigh 13-25 pounds.

This dog breed will generally live 10 – 14 years.

The Havapoo originated in the United States.
