Kees are very smart and trainable. They are motivated to please their trainers and do well at things like obedience, agility, and therapy work.
Because of their intelligence, they learn very quickly and it can be a challenge to keep them engaged. Starting training young is encouraged in order to keep them from picking up negative habits.
Keeshonds are generally very healthy with a lifespan of 12-15 years. They may be prone to certain health problems, including joint issues, epilepsy, heart conditions, progressive retinal atrophy, autoimmune thyroiditis, and skin and coat problems. The health of your pup’s parents play a large role in their overall health.
Weekly brushing of the Keeshond’s thick coat is a great way to keep it plush and clean. Occasional trimming around the paws and hocks will keep things tidy. As with all breeds, their teeth should be brushed and tails trimmed regularly as well as their ears kept clean and dry.
Keeshonds are very adaptable when it comes to daily exercise. Their history had them in positions with a range of activity levels. They will love to spend time playing as well as snuggling on the couch. Even so, it is most beneficial for them to have at least a walk or some form of outdoor physical activity each day.
Keeshonds stand 17-18 inches tall and weigh 35-45 pounds.
