Maltese date back as far as the Roman Empire, where they were a status symbol and fashion statement. When Rome fell, Chinese breeders refined the breed and kept it from going extinct.
Maltese are very intelligent and relational. These little charmers are good at getting exactly what they want. Training should be very consistent and fun. Maltese can be trained in a variety of competitive sports like obedience or agility.
Maltese are healthy dogs, living 12-15 years. All breeds are susceptible to certain health issues, and for the Maltese they are luxating patella, heart conditions, liver issues, and encephalitis. Careful breeding practices and quality diet have an impact on health.
The Maltese’s long coat requires daily brushing to look its best. Regular baths with both shampoo and conditioner make a great difference as well.
Trim nails frequently, brush their teeth several times per week, and check their ears often for signs of infection. Dogs with light-colored coats are also prone to tear stains. If these stains become excessive, a visit to the vet may be in order.
Maltese are energetic dogs, but they do well with moderate levels of exercise. Daily walks and playtime will keep them happy and healthy.
Adult Maltese are toy-sized, weighing 7 pounds or less with a height of 7-9 inches at the shoulder.
