Dachshunds are a brave, endearing little dog in a compact, short-legged body. This breed’s history goes back to Germany, where they were bred to hunt badgers. Today, they grace the lives of millions of pet owners worldwide.

Their coats can be smooth (shorthaired) or rough (longhaired) and they come wide variety of colors and patterns, including solids, two colors, and merles of the colors red, cream, black, chocolate, grizzled, gray, or fawn. 

Dachshunds are very intelligent but they may be stubborn or easily distracted because of their high prey drive and sharp sense of smell. Training them requires patience, consistency, and lots of positive reinforcement. Try and keep your tone from sounding harsh, as this does more harm than help to this sensitive breed.

With proper care, Dachshunds can live as long as 12-16 years. Because of their long backs, they are more prone to disc damage if they become overweight or lack muscle tone. A good diet and proper exercise play an important role in back and overall health. In addition to back problems, they may also be susceptible to cancer, seizures, or heart problems.
The Dachshund may be smooth-coated, wirehaired, or longhaired. Smooth-coated Dachshunds require little grooming beyond the occasional wipe or bath. Wirehaired variety can be groomed several times a year. This involved a hand-stripping process you can do yourself. Longhaired Dachshunds should be brushed frequently and groomed every so often. 

All varieties have floppy ears, which makes the ear canal more susceptible to infection if not kept clean and dry. Their teeth should be brushed consistently and their nails kept trimmed.

Dachsunds are not built for long-distance running, but they do need regular exercise to stay fit and keep their backs strong. This means two moderate walks a day or one walk and some active playtime. Dachshunds also benefit from regularly exercising their minds with things like snuffle mats, puzzles, and tricks.

  • Miniature Dachshunds will be about 5-6 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 11 pounds or less.
