Shiba Inus are bright and inquisitive. They are generally eager to learn and very intelligent which makes training a rewarding experience. Their independent nature can get in the way of training so it's best to keep them engaged and entertained. A bold and confident personality is an asset when training a Shiba.
Shiba Inus are known for their significant shedding, often leaving owners with plenty of fur around the house. While they typically shed twice a year, many owners joke that these periods can last for around 6 months. Routine brushing and blowing out their coat can help to manage the shedding. Shibas can be resistant to nail trimming, so it's best to start this grooming early, or seek help from a professional if it becomes a challenge. Regular grooming not only keeps your Shiba looking great but also supports their overall health.
Most Shibas are relatively energetic and enjoy daily walks. While they aren’t overly hyper, owners should be committed to providing regular physical activity, especially if their dog lacks a spacious yard. Generally, Shibas are very mellow once they mature, but some may experience separation anxiety. It’s important for them to be comfortable spending time in a crate, both when owners are home and overnight, as this helps avoid any negative behaviors.
