The Shichon is a cross of two beloved breeds: the Shih Tzu, and the Bichon Frise. This cross makes for a hypoallergenic and mild-mannered companion. Their darling appearance has earned this hybrid the nickname "Teddy Bear". Shih Tzus are known for their luscious locks and Bichons are famous for their friendly disposition. With this mix, you don't have to choose, you can have the best of both breeds!
Shichons can be a large variety of colors and coat types, depending on which parent breed they favor. Due to their adaptable nature, the Shichon fits well into any kind of family. They adore children and are a great fit for seniors and people with other pets.
Shichons are very intelligent and get along well with other pets and strangers, as long as this is something they’re accustomed to at a young age. They have a sweet, easy-going demeanor and adapt well to new things. Most are very food motivated, so a treat will turn the most stubborn Shichon into an obedient trickster:)
At 12-16 years, the Shichon’s lifespan is longer than most. They are susceptible to the health conditions of both the Shih Tzu and the Bichon Frise, at a much smaller likelihood than their full breed counterparts. The short, elongated back of the breed lends to joint and back issues, mostly in later years. Eye issues are also somewhat common, for example cataracts or small tear ducts causing tear staining.
The Shichon is low shedding but requires regular grooming. Their luxurious coats should be brushed every day to prevent matting and should see a groomer periodically for haircuts. In addition to these things, their teeth should be cleaned regularly, and their nails trimmed monthly.
Shichons have lower energy requirements than most dogs. They are happiest when they are at their human's side, snuggling on the couch or taking a nap. A good regimen for a Shichon is light exercise such as a brisk romp in the yard or a short walk. This is especially important in the later years, both to maintain healthy joints and prevent excessive weight gain.
The Shichon is a small breed, typically weighing 9-15 pounds and standing 9-12 inches tall.
