A Yorkshire Terrier is a good fit training-wise for a new or first-time owner. Yorkies are fairly easy to train and will be patient with their owner. Be sure to use positive reinforcement with them because they are sensitive and can become stubborn easily. For the best results, you should train your pup with the help of a local trainer. In doing so, you will have more confidence and knowledge and bond better with your dog during training sessions.

Many people find that the Yorkshire Terrier’s coat is very similar to human hair. It keeps growing and will need haircuts to keep it to a manageable length. If it is kept long, it will need daily brushing. Along with brushing, weekly baths will keep their coat shiny. Keep their nails trimmed monthly and their ears clean and dry. Because of their toy size, their teeth are prone to decay, so daily brushing is important.

Yorkies need moderate daily exercise, both physical and mental, to be happy and healthy. They love a nice walk almost as much and they will enjoy snuggling on the couch afterward. Despite their small size, Yorkies excel at canine sports and obedience competitions.

These toy Terriers stay small. Even as adults, they only stand 8 to 9 inches at the shoulder, weighing 4 to 10 pounds.

A Yorkshire Terrier generally lives for 13 to 16 years.
